Down pillows can be maintained for years with a few simple steps.
You can wash down pillows in a washing machine, as long as you use a gentle cycle, a mild detergent and cold water. They should not be washed more than 1-2 times per year. You should wash them separately, taking care not to overfill the wash basin.
Use a no-heat or low heat setting in your dryer to gently dry your down pillows back to their original fluffy state. While in the drying cycle, check them often to make sure the feathers aren't clumping. You can gently pull them apart and fluff before continuing to dry.
Treat small stains with natural remedies (such as borax powder) prior to putting your down pillows in a washing machine. Avoid concentrated chemical treatments that can affect your breathing.
Down pillows will retain their luxuriously soft and warm original state if you use protective pillow covers on a routine basis. Choose cotton (preferably organic) covers that can be easily washed with the rest of your bed linens on a regular basis.
Take care to store down pillows in a closet or other storage space that is dry and well-ventilated. Humid areas can result in unwanted mildew.
