When you are watching your weight and you have a craving for something sweet, it is nice to have some ideas for healthy low fat snacks and treats. Here are a few suggestions.
Most of us have a cake mix on the shelf. It can come in handy when you are craving something sweet. There is a way to turn that cake mix into cookies that are low fat snacks and treats. Take any flavor cake mix and add 1 cup water, 1 cup flour, and 2 eggs (or egg whites). If you like nuts or raisins, add some of those. Sometimes you can cheat and throw in just a few chocolate chips. Bake at 375 degrees for 12 minutes.
Smoothies are a wonderful substitute for ice cream. They are one of the most nutritious and healthy low fat snacks. There is no reason to follow a recipe. Be creative and come up with your own concoction. I will use yogurt, fruit, honey, ice and a little bit of milk or juice. Almond milk is also an excellent liquid to add. Even though fresh fruit is the best, you can use frozen or canned fruit. Be careful to count the calories as you measure the ingredients.
Cut up pieces of your favorite fruit like apples, bananas, oranges and pineapple. Dip the pieces of fruit in yogurt and you instantly have low fat healthy snacks. There are many fun flavors and varieties of yogurt on the market. I like to use Greek yogurt because it is so creamy, but any kind will do.
Popcorn is one of the best low fat healthy snacks, but only if you do not drizzle melted butter all over it and pop it in oil. Air popped popcorn is the preferred way to pop. There are some things you can sprinkle on the top of the popcorn to liven it up. Use some parmesan cheese or no calorie spray butter. There are also some fancy popcorn seasonings available.
Whenever I have an extremely bad craving for something sweet, I will make marshmallow cereal treats. There are other cereals besides Rice Krispies that can be used for these treats. I like to use Cheerios. I have convinced myself that they are more heart healthy. Cereal is fortified with vitamins and minerals. The marshmallows are not that bad, although the first ingredient is corn syrup. If you add just a little bit of butter, these can be considered healthy low fat snacks when you are desperate.
I love fruit and popcorn. Thanks for sharing this list. Great job on this list.
I would read this when I'm verging on snack or not to snack! All good suggestions. You know - I can say "no" to just about anything but popcorn. HI5
