In 1682, La Salle landed at the mouth of the Mississippi River. He claimed the land for his native country, France, and named the land he found Louisiana.
In 1860, the oldest recording of a human voice occurred. It wasn't Edison who invented it, either. It was recorded on the phonautograph, which was invented by the French Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville. Thomas Edison's phonograph would later become a much more successful invention.
In 1867, the US Senate ratified a treaty that purchased Alaska from Russia. It only passed by a single vote; a lot of people thought that Alaska was a waste of land at the time. That was before gold and oil were discovered in the land.
I can't remember a time when baseball games weren't played inside large sports stadiums. Up until 1965 though, all games were played outside. On this day in 1965, the Astrodome opened, and the first baseball game was played indoors.
