Portable Water Purification Methods

Introduction:

In the event of a disaster, portable water purification methods will become critical. We will need water to survive and the water will have to be safe to drink.

Boiling

One of the portable water purification methods is to boil it. The amount of time it takes to purify the water by boiling it will depend on where you live. If you live in a high altitude area, the water will be safe to drink after it has been boiled for about five minutes. Lower altitude areas should boil water for at least ten minutes. After the water has cooled, pour it in sanitized containers. Make sure to use food-grade plastic or glass containers.

Bleach

Another one of the portable water purification methods is to use bleach to kill germs. You can use household liquid bleach that contains 5.25 to 6.0 percent sodium hypochlorite. That does not include scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners. Add 1/8 teaspoon of bleach to each gallon of water. Mix it well and let is sit for 30 minutes.

Purifier

A good water purifier can be purchased for about $50 to $100. It should be able to clear the water of waterborne bacteria and viruses. There are two good models that are recommended. They are the Katadyn MyBottle Purifier and the SteriPen water purifier. Use the cleanest salt free water you can find. Cold running river water is better than warm stationary water, for example.

Micro-Filter

Portable water purification methods include using a micro-filter. These filters use a dual filter system to rid the water of micro-organisms. This system works well in most emergency situations. The output of purified water is two quarts per minute. Good brands to purchase are the Katadyn Vario Water Filter, MSR and Sawyer.

Purification Tablets

The last of the portable water purification methods is purification tablets. There are several types of these water purification tablets on the market. The tablets should be EPA registered as a purifier. You only have to drop the tablets in water and wait for the recommended time to drink it. They leave the water tasting fresh.
