There are hundreds of dog breeds in the world with varying sizes, colors, and temperaments. Not to mention price tags! These are currently the five most expensive dog breeds in the world:

Tibetan Mastiff

The Tibetan Mastiff is a very old breed of dogs believed to have originated in Central Asia. Translated, the name means "home guard," which is appropriate as these dogs are very territorial and protective. They are also a status symbol for China's wealthiest citizens. With a price tag of approximately $350,000, they are without a doubt the world's most expensive dogs.

Rottweiler

Rottweilers originally came from Germany and were used to guard livestock and pull meat carts to the marketplace. Their high intelligence and willingness to work make them excellent search and rescue dogs, police dogs, and service dogs. They love the people they live and work with but their protective natures make them unfriendly toward strangers until properly introduced. Priced around $10,000 to $15,000.

Yorkshire Terrier

The "Yorkie" originated in Yorkshire, England and weighs between three to seven pounds. Exceedingly intelligent and affectionate, these friendly little dogs make wonderful family pets. Made popular by celebrity owners such as Paris Hilton, Brittney Spears, and Joan Rivers, the little darlings cost $4,000 to $7,000.

Pharoah Hound

The Pharoah Hound is the national dog of Malta, a small nation in the Mediterranean. It has a sleek, powerful build and is a great outdoors and hunting dog. Because this breed has a strong streak of independence (although not aggressive) and is typically aloof with strangers, these dogs have been deemed somewhat "cat-like" in nature. However, they bond deeply with their owners and make wonderful family pets. They cost around $2,000 to $3,000.

Maltese

This toy breed also originated in Malta and its name translates to "ancient dog of Malta" or "Maltese Lion Dog." They are very playful and cuddly, and thrive on love and affection. Because they are small and hypoallergenic (do not shed) they do well in urban surroundings such as townhomes and apartments. Priced around $1,500 to $2,500.
