Almost any yarn or thread can be used for needlepoint as long as it passes easily through the needlepoint canvas without distorting it and covers the canvas well; however, the top five needlepoint yarns are made especially for canvas embroidery and are the most suitable for stitching needlepoint.
Single-ply tapestry wool and three-ply Persian yarns are examples of wool needlepoint yarns. These threads are the most common of needlepoint yarns, offering great canvas coverage. They are ideal for stitching needlepoint pillows, belts and upholstery.
Cotton embroidery floss is an inexpensive alternative for working a needlepoint project. Although not as durable as wool needlepoint yarn, cotton embroidery floss is great for needlepoint projects that require frequent washing like wearable items.
Another popular needlepoint yarn is pearl cotton, which is a softly twisted single strand yarn. Pearl cotton comes in four thicknesses. Because of its twist, the thread does not lie flat on the canvas as when stitching with wool needlepoint yarn or cotton embroidery floss.
Metallic threads come in different textures like braids, cables and ribbons in a variety of sizes and thicknesses. The most common metallic needlepoint yarns are gold, silver, copper and green and gold Christmas glitter braids.
Many contemporary designs use needlepoint silk threads in bright colors to create a luxurious look. While needlepoint silk threads are quite beautiful, they are also expensive, more fragile and are easily soiled and damaged than other needlepoint yarns.
Excellent!
I really thought the title said needlepoint yams, time for a vision check! I wondered what the difference between the yarns were and now I know, thank you.
