Exercise is a great way to burn calories, these are some tips to enhance your results.
The idea of cardio between sets is to keep your heart rate elevated so that you will burn more calories. Example: You are working your chest, instead of resting, you will perform jumping jacks or jump rope. If you are working your legs, you will do push-ups between sets. This gives the muscles you are working the weights with time to rest while keeping your body active to burn more calories.
Cardio, such as on a machine or outdoors, is a great way to burn calories, but it can be better. Simply strap light wrist or ankle weights on, you will burn more calories. With these couple of pounds more on your body, your muscles will need to work harder resulting in more calories being burned.
If you don't like the idea of cardio between sets, this tip may work for you. Most people are taught to rest 30 seconds to 1 minute between sets, if you do your heart rate will start to slow down. Cut 10-15 seconds off your rest time and you will burn more calories.
Super setting is the act of performing two exercises back to back without rest. You can use two exercises of the same muscle group or you can use opposing muscles. Example of same muscle group: Complete one set of flat barbell chest press, then go directly to one set of flat dumbbell chest flyes. Rest after you have completed one set of each. Example of opposing muscle groups: Complete one set of barbell biceps curls, then go directly to one set of dumbbell triceps extensions. Rest after one set of each is complete. This way of exercising is very intense and will help you burn more calories.
Even if you want to lose calories, you need to eat. Without proper fuel before a workout, you will not have the energy to exercise as long, as hard or as focused. With the right fuel, you be be able exercise much better resulting in more calories being burned. You should eat a healthy snack or meal of about 300 calories (mostly carbs, some protein and a little fat in this meal) about 45 minutes to an hour before you workout.
Just a reminder, some of these tips are for keeping the heart elevated. Always consult your doctor before trying new exercises or ways of exercising.
