If your garage houses everything but your cars and you still can't find stuff, now's the time to get it organized.
Pegboards are a great way to utilize wall space or even space on the side of a shelving unit or cabinet. Invest in metal pegs and bins to keep most used and like type tools and other items handy.
Lidded storage bins like those made by Sterilite or Rubbermaid are better for storing items than cardboard boxes for a number of reasons: they're basically waterproof so if there's a flood, you're items still won't get wet; unlike cardboard, they don't attract roaches or mice; overall they're sturdier than cardboard and help to keep items orderly and protected.
Re-think your garage into stations or staging areas for the different activities that you and your family might do. Create one section or station for sports equipment and toys, one for tools and hazardous materials, one for crafts etc.
Holiday ornaments and decorations don't need to have prime "real estate" on your garage floor, especially since they're only in use for 4-6 weeks every year. Use a garage loft or the top area of free standing shelves to organize items that are seldom or never used. Shelves at eye level should be reserved for the items you use most often.
Paint solvents and garden pesticides are not only toxic to kids and animals, but also flammable. These items should be stored in a cabinet away from small hands or on a top shelf that's out of reach to youngsters and pets.
