Two Birds are worth one in hand: or so the saying goes. What should you do if you find the job of your dreams; however, another employer comes knocking at your door wanting to hire you? Certainly, you will not wish to burn a bridge here; as you may need employer number two at some other point within your career. The following suggestions are offered in turning the second employer down easily.
Always thank the employer first for taking time out of his or her schedule to interview you; and tell them you also appreciate their job offer. This shows employer number two you have given the position some thought.
Once again, thank employer number two you appreciate their time in their decision to place you first on the roster in offering you the position which you have applied.
Explain you have already accepted another position; a position that proved just as favorable as the job they are offering; however, this employer was just one step ahead.
Explain to number two, you would have been happy to accept their offer otherwise; however, you have made a firm commitment to the other company to begin work for them. However, if things do not work out as planned; you hope they'll consider you somewhere down the road for future opportunities; or as your career progresses.
Tell employer number two you enjoyed the interview and what he or she shared with you in regard to the job: and you hope it has not inconvenienced them in any way whatsoever that you have already made a commitment to another position. Again, thank them cordially for their time; and tell them you were pleased they considered your application and credentials so strongly for the position applied; however, once again, things have been firmed up with this other employer.
The idea is to portray to employer number two that they did not fall in line behind the other employer: The commitment to the first employer was just made prior to their getting to you. Any fair employer will recognize candidates who are serious in their job search are not just solely looking at their organization but, in fact, looking at several employment situations, and, in effect, actively interviewing. Keep it in mind, should you be placed in the preceding situation.
