Floods, earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes can be devastating. You can prepare to deal with natural disasters by following these 5 tips.
If you know what the risk is in your area of the possibility of a natural disaster happening, you can better prepare to cope with it. Make sure you have the appropriate insurance coverage on your homeowners or renters insurance to help with the financial burden from damages due to flooding or structural damage.
Have cash tucked away for an emergency. During some kinds of natural disasters, your credit or debit card is not going to help you purchase needed supplies. Having an emergency stash of cash will help you avoid this dilemma.
During many natural disasters such as floods, tornadoes and earthquakes, water is something that people need but often have to stand in line to get. Having a supply of water (three days worth) stocked in your home can help you in the event of a natural disaster.
Have a good first aid kit at home (or one that you can grab and go) with items to take care of minor emergencies. If someone in your household has medical needs like prescription medications that they must have, make sure that you have extra just in case you cannot get to a pharmacy. Be prepared for your health care needs by stocking extra supplies.
Even if you do not normally eat canned foods, having a stock of emergency supplies can be helpful during a natural disaster. Make sure that you have a non-electric can opener to open cans. Mark the cans so that you can see what the expiration date is in order to not have a stock of food that is no good. Canned fruits, tuna, juice, baby food and boxed cereal are all good things to have in case you cannot get to a grocery store.
In areas where hurricanes and other natural disasters can happen, it is better to be prepared than to be stuck.
