Seeds to Sow In January

Introduction:

Get a head start on your vegetable garden and save money by starting your plants from seeds.

Tomato Plants

Choose indeterminate tomato plants to grow so there are fresh tomatoes all season long in your garden. Start the seeds in January so the plants are strong and healthy when the weather warms up and the soil is ready for planting. If you start the seeds indoors in January, you gain about two weeks of growing time. Which means more tomatoes for you and your family.

Broccoli

Broccoli is a cold-weather plant that prefers cooler temperatures for growing. Start your seeds in January to have luscious plants to transplant into the garden come spring time. The weather will still be cool enough that the broccoli will produce tight heads and the shoots will be tender.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers grow quickly but if you start the seeds in January, less time is spent waiting for the cucumbers to ripen. Many varieties produce fruit within 65 days of planting. With the right timing, you can have fresh cucumbers from your garden just as your lettuce is ready for harvest.

Petunias

Why spend money on hanging baskets and border flowers when you can start your seeds in January and grow your own. Petunias are a favorite among gardeners and can be quite expensive at the garden center or nursery. For a few cents, you can buy a packet of seeds and have an entire flat of petunias ready for window boxes or hanging baskets when the garden season starts.

Herbs

Start your own herb garden by sowing basil and other herb seeds in January. Basil is an annual and must be sown each year. Start the seeds early so you have plenty of fresh herbs during the growing season and also for drying. With large, healthy plants, you can harvest your own herbs throughout the growing season and store them for winter use.




Final Thoughts

Think of the plants you buy from the garden center and realize that each plant costs less than a penny to grow from home. Start your seeds in January to save money and have fun with an indoor garden of your own.
