The NES was one of the most popular systems of all time! It had hundreds of games developed for it before its eventual downfall caused by the 16 bit generation. Some of the games were standalone games that will live on in video game fame, others were the precursors to some of today's biggest franchises! Here are some of the best games for the NES!
As far as I'm concerned this is the best game of all time; for any video game system! Nintendo's developers pushed the envelope of NES graphics, created a gameplay that is top notch and developed a cool map system for the Mario Brothers to travel along on their journey to defeat the Bowsers! With the map you could choose to skip certain levels, and even entire maps. Super Mario Brothers 3 (SMB3) was the first Mario game with flying added, and it also had lots of different power-ups, some of which you only had access to a few times in the game. The depth, and challenges of the game created a fantastic adventure for all Super Mario fans out there. And the movie, "The Wizard" featuring Fred Savage didn't hurt either for building anticipation for this top selling game!
Excitebike was a revolutionary Motocross game for the NES. In addition to the exciting races, and tough challenges by computer competitors, there was a building mode whereby you could create some sweet courses to play on. My only complaint, I wish it had worked with the NES 4 Score, for 4 player action. Excitebike definitely deserves a top 5 bid for one of the best NES games!
Back in the days of Zelda there were scant few Walkthroughs available. You might have got a few hints by calling the Nintendo hotline (which was surprisingly; free) but this was a tough game that required a lot of searching about to find the clues to progress to each of the stages. It was a fantastic game, and even the gold cartridge let you know this was a great game the first time you played it.
This was the best of the Mega Man series for Nintendo! The gameplay for each of the subsequent sequels was all here, and the great weapons, the 8 bosses before progressing to Dr Wiley's was all her in this Mega Man game. Mega Man 2 introduced a new type of platform gaming that required knowing what weapons worked with what bosses. A definite NES classic!
This was one of the first RPG's released for the NES. It also gained a foothold int he market by being promoted by Nintendo Power. the game was offered as an incentive for signing up for the magazine. The game had a leveling up approach that might bore current RPGers, but Dragon Warrior required a certain amount of patience and skill to develop a well rounded player who could fight off the enemy successfully! I still remember the countless slimes I killed to progress the levels in that fantastic predecessor to the Final Fantasy series!
