Boys ages three to six love to role-play and this leads to some great themes for their birthday parties. Indoors or out, these ideas can be adjusted to the space and number of guests. Here are some starting ideas for popular birthday party themes for boys from three to six years old.
My kids love nothing more than to build, and tear down in the role of construction worker. They each have a construction vest from the Melissa and Doug line and construction helmets and some plastic tools. For a birthday cake, the bakery didn't have a specific construction theme, so I had them do the background from Cars (just a road and some grass), then I bought little matchbox dozers and roadblocks and had the bakery use brown icing to put a pile of dirt in front of them. Turned out GREAT.
For outside parties, a sandbox with building vehicles and tools is great for the kids. Indoor parties make use of blocks, legos and Moon Sand (on a tarp).
My kids have been going through a "phase" of obsession with rescue workers for the last three years...police, paramedics and firemen are the favorites. A fire truck, ambulance or police car shaped cake is possible as is the "trick" from above (a favorite of mine). Have the bakery do a background of a road and add your own little toys like a police car, fire truck and rescue helicopter miniatures.
Emergency flashing beacons are cheap from online retailers and make great theme decorations for this party. Again, the Melissa and Doug costumes for firemen and policemen are great for the guest of honor. My kids now wear their police and fireman uniforms nearly everyday and for Halloween as well.
Boys start to notice and "play" superhero around four to five years old. Spiderman, Buzz Lightyear and Batman are currently popular. Most bakeries will have templates for trendy superheros. Inivitations and goody bags are also easily available if your boys happen to like one of these themes.
A perennial favorite of boys of all ages. Some preschoolers become enthralled with dinosaurs. Children can play "explorer" and look for hidden dinosaur bones, which you can cut out of construction paper or find as plastic replicas. Dinaosaur themed accessories are also widely available due to the popularity of this birthday party theme.
Helicopters and airplanes intrigue little boys. If you have a small, local airport, it's possible they have a small space for rent for a party. Some have restaurants that might be a good place to celebrate with a small group. If not, this still makes a good theme. Indoor parties could feature a video playing on TV. Many great DVDs show how planes and helicopters are built and work.
