Introduction:Elderly fingers may be riddled with arthritis and it may become increasingly difficult to get dressed. There are a few tips on how to dress the elderly that may well help them retain their dignity and enjoy their clothes too.
The elderly get cold very easily but, if the seasonal weather is heating up in the afternoons, they may get overheated if they can't remove layers. Add a bottom layer of silk underwear, a light shirt, a light sweater and a throw, coat or poncho.
Large buttons are much easier to manipulate than smaller buttons or even snaps. Although, if the choice is smaller buttons or snaps, go with the snaps. Pick clothing with cloth buttons over shiny buttons if possible to make it easier to grip the buttons. Also, check that the button holes are large enough for the button to easily slide through before hitting the cash register with your treasure.
This certainly won't be the style a lot of elderly men or women prefer but, at some point, it may be necessary to purchase elastic waist pants. Select pants in pretty colors or patterns to make them special even if they are elastic waist.
A jogging suit is easy to put on, can work well as an external layer, and is comfortable to wear. Don't worry so much about what other's think; if your senior citizen friend is more comfortable in casual clothes, allow them to wear them, even to a more formal family dinner.
My elderly mom has a problem scooting over in bed on her own, but I did finally figure out that flannel nightgowns weren't helping the issue. Instead of sliding easily around in the bed, the flannel nightgowns were catching on the sheets themselves.
Purchase nylon nightgowns or, for the elderly gentleman in your life, nylon or cotton pajamas.
Sometimes, you have to get very creative when dressing the elderly but, working together, you can come up with a few standard clothing pieces which will keep you both happy.
Great tips. It is obvious that you have experience with this.
The nylon nightgown insight is genius. As usual, the voice of experience is really showing. Thank you.
