For anyone who thinks that a powerful civilization can never fall, I only reply that they should look to history. Throughout the thousands of years that humans have been gathering and progressing, hundreds of civilizations have arisen and fallen. Most were small and of little consequence, but some of the greatest people the world has ever known belonged to civilizations that are now no more.
These raiders, traders, explorers and warriors from the north dominated parts of Europe during the early Middle Ages, sometimes referred to as the Dark Ages. The Vikings made technological strides in warfare and seafaring, but they also had a fairly advanced social structure. Viking women, in fact, had several rights that other European women would wait centuries to receive.
When it comes to advances in mathematics, science, politics, philosophy, drama... well, just about everything, the Greeks are second to none. So much of what we understand today, both about our world and ourselves, can be traced back to the scholars and warriors of Ancient Greece.
The Inca dominated the western coast of South America, beginning in the 1200s and lasting until the Spanish wiped them out in 1572. The Incas used revolutionary architecture ideas to construct stable buildings on very unfavorable lands. The Incas also developed interesting methods of farming and food storage. In the end, the Incas left us with some of the most visually stunning cities, like Machu Picchu, ever constructed in ancient times.
The Romans were the most dedicated and exhaustive builders in the ancient world. From aqueducts that would carry water for miles, to a Colosseum which would still be an architectural feat today. Despite all their advancements, the biggest impact on the world came from the sheer size and breadth of the empire, which brought civilization to so many uncultured areas of Europe.
Under the leadership of Genghis Kahn and his descendants, the Mongols empire grew to encompass 22 percent of the Earth's land area during the late 1200s. The Mongols were instrumental in bridging the gap between Europe and Asia, and allowing information to flow between these areas.
