Diabetes affects over 23.6 million children and adults in the United States. Over 1.6 million new cases of type 1 or 2 diabetes are diagnosed in people age 20 or over each year. The highest percentage of diabetes sufferers are: non-Hispanic blacks-11.8%, Hispanics-10.4%, Asian Americans-7.5% and 6.6% of non-Hispanic whites.
Diabetes causes large amounts of sugar to build up in your bloodstream which in turn pulls fluid from your tissues. This may cause extreme thirst and keep the cycle of drinking fluids and frequent urination. Type 2 diabetes is more intense with these symptoms.
Diabetes may cause weight loss as your body muscle tissues and fat storage shrink from the depletion of sugar and energy supplies needed to nourish your muscles and fat cells.
Insulin is needed to deposit sugar in your cells and with diabetes, there is not enough energy for your muscles and organs. This creates starving tissues and a crashing feeling spurring the instant need to eat something sugary. Even after eating, the hunger may persist, especially in type 2 diabetes.
Fatigue and exhaustion are very common with type 1 and 2 diabetes as the cells are constantly depleted of proper sugar supplies. This may cause irritability and a tired feeling.
Eyesight can be affected by diabetes due to the blood sugar levels being too high. The tissues to the lens of your eyes may be affected by this and cause dizziness or blurred vision. Any or all of these symptoms on a regular basis should be checked by a heath care provider. Diabetes can be fatal if left unchecked.
