We all need to start somewhere, small steps, one a the time, go through some classes, educate ourself, and once we learned more, we will like to implement those ideas in our homes.
Not long ago, going GREEN didn't mean much to many of us, but once people realized is about saving money along the way they started acting more interested.
Every new task you approach which will create some savings in the house will enhance your savings, making you green, should be looked at as an initial investment.
Once you learned that using CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lights) saves about 75% in energy costs, then that will be the first step you want to take for your house; when compare the consumption with the incandescent bulbs, the saving are huge! After replacing all old light bulbs with the CFL in all fixtures, you should seat around and watch out for your electric bill to drop.
Another area you would like to consider is to invest in a dishwasher, if possible an energy start rated unit; the main difference is in the water usage, - hand washing vs dish washing. Occasionally people will say, I like to do hand dishes, - and yet, they don't consider the water running for such a long time...before all are cleaned and rinsed; your water consumption is already high, and so is the amount of soap!
Make sure that your stove, dishwasher or other heat producing units are not placed next to the refrigerator or freezer. Place microwave on the counter space where the vent doesn't blow into a wall to overheat the room.
Place recycle bins in your home office, kitchen and bathrooms - that will make it easy for you to remember recycling.
One common thing is, people overlook using cloth rags instead of towel paper; it's still a better option even so you have to do laundry - or use sham-wow!
- Find a better cleaner, use a concentrated one, - like this, you have one container to throw away only, - a cleaner with organic ingredients will have a lesser impact on the clothes and the Earth.
Replace your soap bars with a soap dispenser.
Sometimes, even simple redecorating of a space, starting with the furniture, window treatments or proper ventilation of a property, will make a great difference in how your house can function to benefit you.
