I love yard sales. Many summers I make enough buying and reselling yard sale items, or having my own yard sale, to fund a family vacation.
I often find lawnmowers, tools, antiques and furniture at yard sales that I can resale at a profit. I make sure things are in good condition and that I know the market so I am not stuck with something.
I often buy a rototiller or tool I need at a yard sale for a fraction of what it would cost retail. Many large items are sold cheaply when the sellers are moving long distances.
I am a real estate investor. Yard sales are often held when someone is cleaning up to sell their home. I have also seen estate sales, yard sales where the owner of the home has passed away or moved into a retirement home. Occasionally I run into a real estate bargain while yard sale cruising.
I actually enjoy driving and bargain hunting. Yard sale cruising is a fun diversion from a work week. It is also cheaper than therapy. I enjoy fairly negotiating prices and finding items I enjoy.
I love antiques. Often good quality antiques are under priced at a yard sale, but still priced high enough most bargain hunters won't step up to the asking price. I have found nice antiques for myself at yard sales. I have also found good antiques and driven strait to an antique shop and sold for a profit.
Some of the stanger things I find in my travels go on my web site for sale at The Cabinet of Curiosity. It is in the links below.
Love those yard sales! Great reasons given here, and like Traqqer, I would never have thought of the real estate point. High 5!
All the reasons I go to yard sales as well, but didn't think of the real estate reason...good point!
