Since dogs are my passion, I'm familiar with most of the great books for a dog lover. And, there seems to be a plethora of books about dogs out on the market at the moment. Any of the below books for a dog lover are sure to be a great present for that special person who loves dogs.
Although I thought that most of the problem with poor Marley's behavioral issues were due to operator error on the part of John Grogan in not training the lab properly, the tale in Marley and Me make for a fun and easy read. Follow this much loved lab through his daily travails and watch the owners become more exasperated as he grows.
I personally am glad that John Grogan didn't write a dog training manual...
Just hearing the name Michael Vick makes my blood boil but this book put a nice spin on the situation in following the dogs who were embroiled in his pit bull fighting operation. (And, WHY is he back playing football?). Regardless of how these wonderful dogs ended up in Michael Vick's bloody hands, the tales of their rescue and subsequent lives are quite heartwarming. A few of the dogs have even become therapy dogs which is a shows a very nice side of the pit bull breed (which, by the way, has gotten a bum rap - there's no problem with pit bulls, it's problems with the owners).
The Chicken Soup books are all feel good types of book but this one will make you cry too as evidenced by the chapter entitled "Farewell My Love." But, the short stories are uplifting and show the wonderful qualities of the canines most of us love and who love us right back.
This book tells a beautiful tale of a dog who wandered into a Marine camp in Baghdad. Even though it's not permissable by the Marine organization, a bond formed between the soldier and the wandering mutt and love was borne. The struggle to send the dog back to the US after Jay was sent back home is involved and heartwarming. This is really a must read book for a dog lover.
After my eyes were shown the power of positive training in working with my Australian Shepherd, Killian, I've never looked back at a pinch collar. A gentler, kinder trainer was born. And, if training a dog can be made more fun for both the owner and the dog, why not? With the use of this book, a clicker and some tasty treats, you'll be amazed at the behaviors your dog will offer.
There are many many great books for someone who loves dogs but the above are among my favorites of all time.
I'm more of a cat woman (yea, right!), but this is a great dog list!
Marley and Me .. the movie was cute, a little sad.
Thanks for these awesome suggestions! Dog training can be so much fun, and reading a good training book is important to build a good relationship with your pet.
Great list of dog literature. I wasn't aware the first listing was a book. I thought it was only a film.
I haven't heard of all of these but the ones that I have heard of are great books. Thanks for the list.
