If you hope to live as long as the elderly parent you care for, you'd better recognize and steer clear from some unhealthy stress relievers. Although you might want to jump in with both feet when you're a full time caregiver, it's better to just take a long walk with a walkman...or go on vacation (probably to the nut house...).
Ah, the poison of choice around here when stress rears its nasty head. A tumberful of bourbon may seem like a great idea to release stress, but the resulting headache the next morning is not going to make you feel very good about your date with Mr. Beam or Mr. Daniels. If you must imbibe in bourbon, water it down with either, well, water or diet soda. Or, just suffer....you only live once...
Yes, there it is...the elephant has been outsted from the middle of the room. Those who were around in the 60s will be familiar with most illegal drugs which, although they may make you see pretty colors for 30 minutes or so (I've read....), reality will set in in about an hour rendering that delightful time useless (if you can even remember it).
Although not illegal, an ice cream binge should be. Personally, I'd much prefer to down a few pounds of homemade macaroni and cheese and leave the ice cream for those light-weights (pun included). Grabbing a spoon and a half gallon might make you feel pretty good at the moment but, once the calories navigate their ways to your hips in a few weeks, you'll be rueing the day.
Ah, you can run but you cannot hide. Sometimes the stress of being a caregiver is enough to turn the strongest of us to jelly, and you may want to take a long car ride and not look back. Don't do it - just go to the local 7-11 and get a half gallon of Haagen Daus. Note to self: stop by the liquor store on the way home - out of bourbon.
Anything that is addictive and fun seems to be bad for one trying to relieve stress, and gambling is up there with bourbon (although having a nice shot of bourbon while shooting some craps is a great time). Gambling, when done responsibly, is a great time but it's very easy to get carried (or carted) away.
Look for some healthy ways to relieve stressful situations like pet a dog, read a book, or, hey here's an idea - how about doing some exercise. I might just join you after this bourbon is drained.
You nailed them all. Thanks for sharing. I wish some of the 'boat people' would adhere. Not to mention the bourbonites! H5
These are evils one can turn to when dealing with the stress of being a caregiver. Good list for what to avoid.
Pretty funny stuff. Now, excuse me while I drink my Bourbon/Haagen Daus float while playing online poker. :P
Definitely not how to relieve stress the healthy way. Nice list.
Well my goodness gracious, you just about nailed those naughty unhealthy stress relievers. HI5
Ah yes, these are excellent stress relievers (or escapes) for all of us!
