Introduction:If one of your goals is to lose weight, you'll be happy to learn of some foods that will fill you up without adding a lot of calories to your diet. The below foods are among my favorites when a cookie should not do!
The old adage of eating your fruit instead of drinking it is a good one. Eating the whole fruit (minus skin for items such as oranges or grapefruits) not only takes up more space in your stomach than a glass of fruit juice but also adds fiber to your diet. The more fiber, the better.
Cut up a medium sized apple (3" in diameter) and sprinkle with just a bit of lemon juice to keep it fresh. Eat this nutritional snack to curb any hunger pains in between meals. A medium sized apple has around 95 calories and 4.4 grams of fiber if you eat the skin (which you should).
If it's bulk you're looking for, you almost can't do better than a bag of 94% fat free popcorn. Five cups of this type of popcorn will add only 75 calories to your diet.
For a more savory snack, sprinkle popcorn with a bit of hot sauce or just a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. One tablespoon of grated parmesan cheese will only add 22 calories to your popcorn snack.
Although these are not my favorite, rice cakes are great to add bulk to your stomach and make you feel full, even if it is air that's filling it! Select brown rice cakes for the most nutrition and fiber with low calories - they're around 35 calories a rice cake and have around 0.4 grams of fiber per cake.
Club soda (aka seltzer water and/or soda water) is a great way to fill up an empty stomach as it's just plain water with carbonation. And, with the variety of flavors available, it's tasty too!
Make your own flavored seltzer water by adding in a teaspoonful of your favorite flavor of crystal light. Delicious!
You'll get more volume and feel fuller if you select filling food vegetables which have a higher water content. For example, instead of a side dish of shelled peas, select snow peas and eat the whole pod. Choose a plump cucumber for a snack and dip in a bit of low fat salad dressing. Tomatoes are another great vegetable which have a high water content. During the winter season, look to high end grocery stores for vine-ripened tomatoes for the best flavor.
Mixing up your diet with different items will help you stick to our weight loss plan. Add the above items to your daily meals for the best ways to fill yourself up without adding a lot of calories to your diet.
