In my book (pun intended) there is only one way to bookmark a page in a book and that is with a bookmark. In the absence of a bookmark at hand, I will try to remember the page number where I stopped reading, but it's difficult and so in some ways it's understandable why readers have resorted to easy and sometimes destructive ways to mark a page in a book.
Bookmarks mark a reader's place very carefully and with no harm coming to the book. Bookmarks can be simple, artistic and sometimes handcrafted. Some of the most creative bookmarks are made from materials other than paper, such as string, fabric or metal.
Other than a bookmark or sticky note or receipt or some other innocuous piece of paper, turning down a page corner in a book probably does the least amount of damage compared to some other ways to mark a page in a book. Read on...
Gasp! Nothing will render a book spine-creased faster than flipping it face-down on a table with the pages open, but books survive this treatment all the time. They might retaliate, however, with a loose page or two.
It's rare that I see a book where the corners of pages have been torn off as the reader progresses through the book but I have seen it several times. As you flip through the book, it looks like a puppy bit the corners off of every sixth page.
...rip out each page as you read it! I'm fairly confident that most people do not do this, but I have seen it done and have read about people doing it.
Keeping a book in its original condition as much as possible will help the book hold its value, especially if you're building a home library.
The best is when you find a book you cannot leave alone and read cover to cover without needing to mark your place. A rare pleasure now-days.
H5 on front page. I love bookmarks and will use anything, even toilet paper over the methods named.
Horrors! Bending, folding, and mutilating a book? Never. Good list.
Returning for another h5 and a congratulations on the front page spot!
Congrats on the front page...love this list. I usually bookmark but not always...I usually read my Bible everyday so that has book marks; but I also read three or four things at once...not all those will have bookmarks. One thing I have done is I use those little sticky flags...and sometimes have several of those in a book especially if I am researching and want to use points or look into things a little deeper. H5
I like the fold down method best. H5
Great list.
Oh my I won't be lending any of my books to the #5 person.I never heard of such an afront to any literature material. Thank you for the interesting list. h5
It hurts to hear the sound of a book page ripping! Yikes! Bookmarks rule!
hehe. I have never heard of number #5. very interesting. Great list!
Interesting list. I think I will stick with your number 1, although I have done number 2.
