Are you thinking of getting a new puppy? Here are some things you may want to consider first, or should be aware of.
Kids and pups can be great, or can be a disaster. Small breed pups are easily hurt by rough play or kids that are too small to hold them correctly. Large dogs can hurt a young child and are often provoked into doing so when the child sends mixed messages to the dog.
Although pet stores often sell cute pups, they get them from low quality breeders. In buying these pups you pay far more than the pup is worth and support the cruelty of mass breeding pups for profit (not quality).
The term purebred only means the dog has registration papers proving the breed, it does not mean it is a quality dog. Many purebred dogs are unhealthy, while many crossbred dogs (or mutts) have what is called hybrid vigor.
If you want a purebred you should only buy from a reputable breeder (see link below on buying a purebred pup) otherwise note that there are many mixed breed dogs in shelters waiting to be adopted.
If your yard is not fenced you will want to get a dog run. Keeping a dog on a chain is risky, the dog is vulnerable to be attacked and often dogs kept on chains become aggressive. Some cities have laws against keeping dogs chained.
Your new pup cannot be expected to know to go outside to pee or poop, it can take a month for them to learn this (crate training works best).
After that the pup also needs to learn other things, not just "sit" and "stay" but proper socialization and more - all of which are best taught by going to proper obedience lessons.
A very thought provoking most helpful list on this topic. H5
