Before New Kids On The Block there was another group of charismatic kids from Boston. Produced by Maurice Starr, New Edition proved to be one of the most influential groups in the genre of R&B. New Edition not only spawned several unforgettable tracks as a whole but also had numerous hits as the group divided and conquered. Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill all had major hits as solo artists. Bell Biv Devoe became a successful group as well with hits like "Poison" and "Do Me". Finally Michael Bivins discovered another group that went on to be one of the best selling acts of the nineties: Boyz II Men. So here are my favorite New Edition tracks.
An early example of blending rap with a more crafted pop hook, this song equals instant nostalgia with irresistable pop hooks and early hip-hop flavor.
Putting the spotlight on Bobby Brown, Mr. Telephone is a soulful ballad. Hearing an earlier song like this makes Brown's cocaine habit seem more tragic.
If you grew up in the late eighties/early nineties, you more than likely tried the dance in this video. One of their defining, enduring hits.
Showcasing the arrival of Johnny Gill, his manly voice gave a new sound to the group. This is one of the best R&B songs period.
As recently as 2007 New Edition was still releasing hot, R&B jams. Hot 2Nite is a great example showing vocal group how to do it.
New Edition has left their legacy and is clearly one of the best R&B groups of the eighties and nineties.
Wow, this list takes me back. Great list of songs. I also liked their song "Candy Girl," too.
