Tonight the Green Bay Packers kick off the football season. They are a great team with a great history. Wonder if you knew any of the following?
Their original name, in 1919, was The Indian Packers because that was who their original sponsor was. The Indian Packing Co was also Curly Lambeau's employer at the time. Then in 1921, when they joined the NFL, the Indian Packing Co was bought out by the Acme Packing Co, so the team name also changed. They became the Acme Packers until eventually, they just became known as the Green Bay Packers and the name just stuck.
If you guessed Travis Jervey, you are correct. He was lighting some firewood in his fireplace, poured some gasoline on the wood, then struck a match. All in all, he ended up burning off his eyebrows, eyelashes, arm hair and some leg hair.
Randy Woodfield, also known as tht I-5 Killer. He is currently serving a life sentence at the Oregon State Penitentiary. He had gotten into trouble during his teens and early twenties - vandalism, indecent exposure, public indecency. Once drafted by the Packers in 1974, they felt he wasn't quite good enough, so they cut him during training camp. Upon returning home to the West Coast, he began his serial killing "career." He was convicted of 3 murders, but has been suspected in at least 44.
Charles Martin. What a big powerhouse he was. Earlier in the game, the media noted that Martin was wearing a towel with numbers on it. Martin claimed it was a "hit-list" of the Bears he hoped to "get." During a play, after McMahon threw an interception pass, Martin grabbed McMahon and slammed him to the ground, injuring his shoulder. That injury ended McMahon's '86 season and earned Martin an ejection from that game and two suspensions for the next two games. Sadly, Charles Martin passed in 2005, at age 45, due to kidney failure.
No. In case you don't read further, I wanted you to know that that particular story is not true. Here's what happened.
Devine gave an interview to Time Magazine in 1974, when he and the Packers were not very happy with each other. Upon his arrival to GB, apparently Devine had claimed that many of the plays that Lombardi had run, he had stolen from him (Devine) who had been coaching at U of MO, amongst other things. Anyhow, he told the reporter that he and his family had received death threats, were being treated rudely, and that some fans had even killed his dog. Other news establishments have taken this story and run with it without checking the facts as well.
But in 2000, Devine wrote his autobiography, where he came clean. He stated that a farmer had been firing his gun to scare his dog and had accidentally shot his dog.
