I am using the word "feelings" to mean feelings and emotions. They are not quite the same thing but have a lot in common.
Whatever you feel is true for YOU at any given moment, but that doesn't make it true. For example, "I feel so worthless." That is a statement of how you feel but it is not a fact that you are worthless. Feeling strongly about something doesn't mean you are right.
Feelings can be tossed at others like spears or used to string people along - but that's not their purpose. How you feel is information, or a picture of what's going on with you, in the moment. One of humanity's biggest weaknesses is using feelings to hurt or control others.
No matter what you feel it's temporary. This is a source of dis-satisfaction and relief. When good feelings fade you may feel disappointed. When difficult/painful feelings diminish you're likely to be happy about it. If you find yourself stuck in a difficult feeling consider seeking professional help.
Feelings tell us about ourselves and give us a connection to one another and the natural world. They have purpose. Fear prepares our body for action. Grief is cleansing and helps us let go. Anger can let us know we're not being treated well or not getting our needs met.
So many people dismiss their feelings because feelings don't "make sense." They often are irrational but whatever you feel there's a reason inside you. Your memories, perceptions, beliefs, old hurts and fears color your feelings and logic has nothing to do with it.
Feelings can be a powerful ally.
Great list.
