The debate between which is better, dogs or cats, has been raging for years and will continue to be a topic of controversy for years to come.
Though many people claim to love ALL animals, most usually have a preferred species. Let's take a look at some reasons people may choose dogs over cats.
Dogs need exercise (so do cats, but they get it in a different way) and therefore YOU get more exercise by being a good puppy parent (taking them for walks or hikes through the mountains, etc.). You can also get active by getting your pup involved in agility, Frisbee catching and many other things.
Dogs can be taken for walks getting you out and about where you can meet new people. They also have 'dog parks' where humans can socialize while their pups play. Dogs are just easier to 'take with you' and therefore give you a reason to get out into the world.
Not all dogs are 'Guard' dogs, but most will usually alert you to things like someone coming into the house uninvited, fires or other dangers.
Yes cats can be trained (if you have tons of patience & determination), but usually only a few basic commands (unless you're a pro-trainer). Dogs can do some fun tricks to entertain you and your guests that most cats find beneath them.
Dogs, originally breed for different jobs, can be of great service in many ways. (Therapy dogs, Police dogs, Seeing-eye dogs, Service dogs, etc.) And let's not forget they can even be taught to bring you your slippers (where your cats usually only put small dead things IN your slippers).
There may be other things that dog lovers claim are characteristics of dogs over cats (i.e. dogs are more affectionate, smarter, etc.), but most of these things are not dog specific.
As in any discussion there are always exceptions to the general rules, what it comes down to in reality is preference and perception. Whichever you prefer, just love them and protect them and they will be forever thankful and loving in return.
xedgexpax - if you see my other posts (top 5 reasons cats are better than dogs) you'll see I address some of those things you say in your post. I also say at the closing of this post that not all things people attribute to dogs are just dog specific - just as not all things people contribute to cats are cat specific (i.e. you say cats don't beg - 4 of my 7 DO and in fact most of the 7 of them will come and sit around me as close as they can when they know you have food).
Also I state in my one post that neither is 'better' it's just a preference, although you could consider one species 'better' than the other for particular lifestyles. In any case, I hope you enjoyed the post and like it says this topic will always be strongly argue for both sides into eternity.
They are all good reasons to have a dog...but they do not prove that dogs are better than cats. Cats usually don't beg for food while your eating. Cats don't need to be taken out to potty 3 or 4 times a day. Cats are quiet and they tend to calm a person. I had a cat attack my b/f when he threatened me and the dog just layed there sleeping. Cats can also learn tricks. Cats are wonderful therapy. I could go on. :)
I had a cat that played fetch as well (and hide-and-seek). I love them both so it's hard to say one is better than the other. I think they each have their pros and cons and it just depends on people's lifestyles and preferences.
My cat grows like a dog and chases down the water meter reader. She was raised with Shar-Pei dogs and she even barks. She can fetch, but she has the cat temperament of "Why bother?"
