Stomach cancer is often treated by surgically removing a portion or all of your stomach. After the surgery, you will have to change eating habits to avoid dumping syndrome. Dumping syndrome occurs when food passed, undigested, directly into the intestine.
Include protein in all meals and snacks. Protein takes longer to digest and will help your body heal after the surgery. However, do not eat meats that are fried or tough to chew. Scrambled eggs, tuna salad and cottage cheese are all ideal high-protein foods.
Do not drink fluids at the same time as you eat food. Enjoy sugar-free drinks about 30 to 60 minutes before eating. Do not include foods which are liquids at room temperature with your meals. These include ice cream, Popsicles and gelatin. Enjoy these foods between meals, and only in sugar-free versions.
Only eat small amounts of food. If you feel full do not force yourself to continue eating. Focus on eating six to eight meals a day--or more if you have undergone a total gastrectomy.
Lying down and resting after eating for about 15 minutes may reduce dumping syndrome. Your body will slow down the digestive process and avoid dumping syndrome.
Work with a medical professional, such as a dietitian, to plan your meals in advance. Keep your kitchen stocked with foods you can still enjoy. If you begin to loose weight, contact your doctor.
