Obstructive Sleep Apnea, or OSA, is a condition where the breathing passage narrows during sleep making breathing difficult. The breathing passage can be so narrow that no air can get through. This greatly disturbs sleep. Many people wonder what the signs of sleep apnea are.
We can all snore once in a while. Snoring can occur in people with allergies or illnesses. Snoring goes to a new level in people with OSA. It can become extremely loud and can be heard all over the house. One of the signs of sleep apnea is hearing complaints from family members that your snoring is too loud.
Another one of the signs of sleep apnea is a pattern where snoring is interrupted by gasping for breath. This happens when breathing actually stops for a few seconds and then restarts. Patients may not realize this is happening. A friend or family member may notice this frightening condition and bring it to the attention of the sufferer.
One of the most troubling signs of sleep apnea is being constantly tired. People with this problem can find themselves falling asleep at work or even while driving. They may find themselves depending on caffeine to stay awake during the day in order to get things done. It can seem like there is constant fatigue.
Emotional signs of sleep apnea are depression and anxiety. These two things can become hard to deal with. Although not everyone with the condition will experience this, they may find trouble concentrating or remembering things. Others may become irritable and sensitive. Some of these obstructive sleep apnea symptoms start out slowly and progress over time.
Signs of sleep apnea include physical symptoms. Some people will wake up from sleep with a headache or nausea. Others will experience getting up to go to the bathroom frequently during the night. Men will often experience impotence and women who are menstruating will experience irregularities. Whenever these symptoms become bothersome, medical advice is needed.
