Introduction:

Your backyard can be a wonderful place to enjoy the summer, but if it is just a patch of grass (or patch of dead grass), you might not enjoy your time there as much as you could. Consider adding a few of these features to make your backyard experience just that much better.

Pool

Number one on this list, and number one recommended backyard addition by kids everywhere. Nothing takes the heat out of a hot day like a swimming pool. Swimming pools, of all shapes and sizes, not only keep you cool and give you a place to play, but they also create an outdoor congregating place for friends and family. Best of all, while a pool is quite expensive to install and maintain, you recoup some of that expense in increased property value.

Water Feature

Water features encompass a whole range of garden additions, from fountains to ponds to waterfalls. The sound of moving water, from a slight trickle in a pond or the rush of a waterfall as it crashes down a set of rocks, can be soothing and relaxing. Water features can be a great centerpiece for a garden, or you can put it off to one side of your yard, giving you a private, quiet place to enjoy it.

Pergola

Pergolas are essentially a set of roof beams suspended at least 8 feet off of the ground. Pergolas can help define a space without enclosing it in with walls. Pergolas are a wonderful place to have an outdoor table or couch, so you can enjoy the outside while still having a little bit of cover. You can also incorporate climbing vines and a trellis with your pergola, so that the vines grow up the side and hang down from the top.

Fence

A fence is a great way to define a space, but it can do so much more. The right fence can add a scenic touch to a yard or landscape. Whether you put in a white picket fence for that rustic Americana look, a stone wall for that rural highlands look, or just a simple cedar fence that will blend in with your shrubbery. With so many fencing options out there, you are sure to find something that suits your personal tastes.

Deck

A deck can transform an otherwise bland backyard into one of the main congregating places in your house. A deck will allow you to socialize outside while keeping your feet off of the ground so they stay dry and clean. If you really want to to step up your deck experience, install a sprawling, multi-level deck that connects the entire back and side of your house.




Final Thoughts

Some of these features, like the pool or the sprawling deck, will require a professional to install them. Others, however, you can build yourself with just a little know-how and hard work.
