Who does not love his pet? A very rhetoric question indeed. To have a pet also means to ensure that your pet must be free of fleas, ticks and any other parasites.
Embedded ticks must be removed head and all. To be sure of getting out every last bit, dab on alcohol, then pull the tick straight out with tweezers; but never twist it.
If a cat or dog rubs its ears often, it may have ear mites - a serious problem. Other signs are bad odour or dark discharges from the ears. A Vet must be consulted in such cases.
Try to prevent a cat or a dog from eating the prey they captures. Birds, rabbits and rodents carry parasites that can be transmitted to a pet.
Have a newly acquired puppy or kitten checked for worms. Thereafter, have it checked once a year when it gets it shots or whenever it has repeated problems with loose bowel movements.
Puppies should be inoculated against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus and Para-influenza at 6-8 weeks, at 9-11 weeks, and again at 3-4 months. Annual boosters are essential.
