When kids are young, it's easy to get them interested in books. Reading time is a fun time where they get to listen to stories, see the magical pictures and snuggle with their favorite reader. As they get older, however, it becomes more difficult to keep them interested in books.
It is not hard to find books that have been turned into movies these days. Suggest to your child that you and your child read the book together, then see the movie.
Taking the above suggestion one step further, you could implement a family book club. This would enable the whole family to gather around after reading and discuss the book together. If you are not able to do this with the family, another option would be to enlist your child's friends and one of their parents to create a book club.
Some kids enjoy reading about a character and are woeful when their book comes to an end. This is the beauty of the series, and there are so many of them these days that you are sure to find one that interests your child.
If your child isn't all that keen on the wizard world, then suggesting he read the Harry Potter series will not interest him one bit. There are a number of series today by various authors that include exciting adventures, a touch of the science fiction and fantasy, that it should be easy to inquire with a children's librarian about a book that would interest your child.
Remember how you used to read them when they were little? Even though your children grow up, sometimes they still like to be babied. This is similar to reading the book together, however, you can read a chapter aloud to your child before bed or during a certain allotted time. You and your child can switch off reading or if your child needs help with reading aloud and reading comprehension, have them read aloud to you.
Great ways to keep kids reading. My granddaughter loves to read. H5
