Pretty Woman is the story of a prostitute (Julia Roberts)who gets hired to be the escort of a handsome, rich, business man (Richard Gere) but ends up with more than just a business deal. This sounds like the beginning of a horror movie, but it really is a whimsical, romantic comedy; one of the best at that.
No other movie quite shows female friendship in such depth and with such passion. Fried Green Tomatoes is the story of an unhappy housewife (Kathy Bates) who befriends an old lady in a nursing home (Jessica Tandy) who then tells said unhappy housewife stories about Idgie (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth (Mary-Lousie Parker). Expect lots of laughing, crying, and hugs.
Can men and women be JUST friends? Maybe some can, but Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) have a hard time figuring it out. This movie is more than a romantic comedy; When Harry Met Sally is a story about friendship, love, and the place in the middle where they often meet unexpectedly.
The Holiday is the story of two dissatisfied women (one in California, the other in England) who need a break from their normal lives. Iris (Kate Winslet) is hopelessly in love with a prick who strings her along, and Amanda (Cameron Diaz) is a workaholic with commitment issues who doesn't cry, not even when she kicks out her cheating boyfriend. The two switch houses for the length of their "holiday" and friendship, love, and self-realization follow.
Bridget Jones is appealing because she seems a bit more "normal" than the other ladies of Rom-Com land... and not just because she has a few extra pounds. No, Bridget Jones is more "normal" because she stresses about weight, reads self-help books, makes every day mistakes, and keeps a diary. Watching these movies is like sharing in the life of a friend. The first movie is about Bridget's (Renee Zellweger) struggle with love and life and two men: her sexy boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) and her childhood playdate, seemingly snooty Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). The second movie takes Bridget away on a trip that could change her life forever. She is also forced to finally figure out her heart and make things right.
Other great additions: The Princess Bride, Center Stage, Grease, The Breakfast Club, Working Girl, Steel Magnolias, A Walk to Remember, The Notebook, America's Sweethearts, Valentine's Day, The Wedding Date, Sleepless in Seattle, Dirty Dancing, Something New, and Ever After.
Yeah Mean Girls! I also didn't put Clueless on here, and that's a good one too. So many movies, so little time. :) Thanks for the comments!
