I live on a hobby farm, we do keep some animals, but want people to be aware of some needless cruel practices that are common in some areas.
Mulesing is absolutely torturous. This is primarily practiced on wool sheep in Australia. It is basically slicing off the rump of a fully concious sheep. Crutching is far less cruel and something I do not have such an issue with.
This is very cruel. Hens stuffed into tiny cages with not much more room than standing on a sheet of paper. The USA has some of the smallest cage standards in the world.
Roosters don't lay eggs and their meat. When the chicks are sexed most males are put on a conveyor belt and fed into a meat grinder to become pet food.
In order to get milk from a dairy cow her calf is taken away. These calves are often kept in tiny shelters where their ability to move is limited. While most calves would rather be playing and bucking in a pasture, dairy calves are kept immobile, and are slaughtered as babies.
Some people place a high value on the pelts from unborn lambs. So much so that Karakul ewes are killed before giving birth, or kicked to induce labor earlier. The lambs are killed and skinned, simply for fashion.
Warning some links contain graphic images.
For sure there are many other cruelties in the name of the livestock industry, these are but a few.
Very sobering indeed and thanks for sharing it. H5
