Introduction:The crock pot is a great appliance to use when serving a buffet style dinner on Thanksgiving day. The foods listed below are best served warm and the crock pot will help you to keep them that way throughout the day.
There is nothing worse than waiting your turn to dip mashed potatoes only to realize when you take your first bite that they are cold. Once you make them add them back to a preheated crock pot and keep them on the lowest setting throughout the meal. **NOTE** If you substitute evaporated milk for the regular milk the mashed potatoes will hold up better to the extended exposure to heat.
My husband looks forward to the turkey gravy on Thanksgivng more than any other dish. I keep it warm throughout the meal by adding it to one of my smaller crock pots. I keep the lid on it until ready to serve. Once we're ready to eat, I just remove the lid and add a small ladle for dipping.
Apple cider is so comforting when heated up and served in mugs. I start the mulled cider at the beginning of my cooking process on Thanksgiving day. I add a gallon of cider to one of my larger crock pots along with the orange slices and spices and simmer on low. By the time everyone starts to wonder in it is ready to be served.
Even though there is stuffing or dressing at the Thanksgiving meal there will also be dinner rolls. If you want to keep these warm you can use your crock pot to make a makeshift steam table/ warmer to keep these warm, but not dry them out. Do this by putting a couple of inches of water in the bottom of a large crock pot. Turn a heatproof soup or cereal bowl upside down. Now place a heatproof casserole dish (that doesn't snuggly fit, you want to have room between the casserole dish and the sides of the crock pot) on top of the bowl. Place your rolls in the casserole pan and leave the crock pot set to low. If you're worried about condensation from the lid making your rolls soggy, place a dish towel over the rolls.
If you have any vegetables that you serve in there whole, uncasseroled (if that's even a word) state, the crock pot is perfect for keeping those warm. The vegetables that are kept warm in our holiday spread in the crock pot are corn on the cob and green beans.
Use the crock pot to keep many foods warm this Thanksgiving. By utilizing the crock pot for warming instead of cooking you'll never have to eat cold foods again.
