On this day in 1913, the 17th Amendment to the US Constitution became law. This required direct election of Senators. Before, they were elected by state representatives, not directly by the people.
Hate your job? Be glad you don't live in the time of Franklin D. Roosevelt. On this day in 1943, he passed a law saying that you could not change your job unless it would help the war effort. It kept your wages from going up too. It also banned price increases, but if you were stuck in a dead end job and were prohibited from getting a raise, that might have been a small comfort.
While I don't remember him as a tennis player, evidently Arthur Ashe was a great tennis player. On this day in 1992, he announced that he had been diagnosed with AIDS. He ended up getting the HIV virus that causes AIDS while getting a blood transfusion. He would later die from the disease.
On this day in 2008, the Bahrain World Trade Center was completed. This unique building had wind turbines integrated into its structure. It was the first building to do so.
