Nothing says "crunch" quite like an almond. Not only are they satisfying snacks, almonds are very good for our health.
If you've been diagnosed pre-diabetic, your cells aren't using insulin efficiently. Chances are your doctor advised changing your eating habits. Eating a nice handful of almonds daily may reduce insulin resistance, according to an article in The Journal of the American College of Nutrition. The study also noted almonds lowered the risk of heart disease in those with pre-diabetes, due to lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol. When consumed with a meal, almonds help reduce blood sugar levels that usually spike after eating.
Almonds contain copper, riboflavin and manganese, all energy producing minerals. Studies suggest almonds contribute to heightened energy. Keep in mind this snack is better for us than chips or candy bars, but they do contain substantial calories.
Obese adults, aged 65 and older, were observed and the group who ate almonds, in addition to a low calorie diet lost more weight than the control group who weren't given almonds. Other studies suggest almonds lower the risk of weight gain, in those who eat a handful of them twice weekly.
A prime benefit of almonds is promoting heart health. They are fiber-rich and contain monounsaturated fats. They are a smart source of the antioxidant, Vitamin E. They are high in magnesium and potassium, which are essential to maintain good heart health
If you have gallbladder or kidney problems, be aware that almonds contain oxalates that crystallize in body fluids, which can lead to adverse health conditions. Of course, if you are allergic to nuts, do not consume almonds.
