When a recipe calls for ½ a pound and you have a one pound box it is easy to add just a ½ pound to your mixing bowl. But what happens when it asks for 1 cup of eggs or a 1/4 of a cup of butter? We all tend to get lost for awhile and have to stop and try and calculate the differences between the two. It isn't always that easy.
1 pound of cake flour = 5 cups of sifted flour
1 pound of all purpose flour = 4 cups of sifted flour
1 pound of all purpose flour or bread flour = 4 ¾ cups of cake flour
1 pound of peaches = 4 medium sized peaches
1 medium orange = 1/3 cup of orange juice
1 medium lemon = 3 tablespoons of lemon juice
4 large lemons = 1 cup of lemon juice
1 lemon = 1 ½ teaspoons of grated lemon zest
4 large lemons = ¼ cup of grated lemon zest
1 pound of dried prunes = 2 1/2 cups of dried prunes
1 pound of cooked prunes = 4 cups of stewed prunes
11 graham crackers = 1 cup of graham cracker crumbs
These are great for making a crust for tarts and your famous NY style cheesecakes.
1/4 pound of marshmallows = 16 large marshmallows
Terrific to know when making Rice Krispie treats or figuring how many Smores are going to be made as snacks.
1 pound of walnuts already shelled = 4 cups of nuts
Nuts are great additions to many desserts, cakes, pies and pastries. When you have a bag with shells the poundage is different once the nuts are removed from their outer coating.
Measuring is a breeze when you know how to calculate the amounts needed!
