Lake Monticello in Drew County, Arkansas is a big bass destination that draws anglers from all over the country to fish for trophy bass of a lifetime. Here is my list of top five baits for springtime bass on Lake Monticello!
As the surface temperature begins to warm, bass stage on secondary points. These bass are just coming out of their wintertime funk and are hungry, but still a little lethargic. A shallow crankbait in a shad or red pattern can bring on reaction strikes like nothing else at times!
Along the same time as the above crankbait fishing, jerkbaits can call up bass for an easy meal. Bass along roadbeds and pond levees can be suckers for a baitfish colored jerkbait like Lucky Crafts, Jackalls, Bombers, etc.
Soft Plastic lizards are hard to beat during all phases of the spring. Prespawn, spawning, and post spawn bass will bite Lizards on Monticello. Earth-toned colors like watermelon seed and green pumpkin tend to be great choices.
Stick baits such as Senkos are good for bass after they come into the shallows. Bass will congregate around shallow cover like lilly pads and stick ups. When this happens, Senko type baits can be unbeatable!
Live bait is the oldest form of bait. Large live bait catches numerous trophy sized bass every year on Lake Monticello. Whether fished under a balloon or on the bottom Black Salties and shiners are hard to beat throughout the spring fling!
Hopefully, this list will give you a headstart on choosing your weapons for tackling Lake Monticello!
