Aquariums are a great way to spend the day--and they are all non-profit. Most have learning and preservation goals.
This is one of the biggest aquariums in the world with over 10 million gallons-including one tank that comes in at 6.3 million gallons. Adults are $35 although pricing changes and may be more expensive on the weekend. 10:00 am to 6:00pm hours start next week. I'm 100% serious when I say that fishing poles are among the items that you cannot bring in. This one opened in Atlanta in 2005.
This one is in Chicago and gets about 2 million visitors a year. It is home to over 32,500 animals. Pricing for this one has several options. There is a $35 day pass and there is also an $8 general admission; it looks like the $8 deal is not too bad.doesn't give access to some areas and events but probably gives a pretty good overview of their collection. His one has about 5 million gallons of aquariums and has been open since 1930.
This one is one of two California Aquariums on the list. This one is open from 9:30am to 6:00pm. Guess what? They also have a $35 day pass (I am beginning to see a theme here). It gets about 1.8 million visitors a year and it is difficult to tally the total aquariums space in gallons. The largest tank is 1.2 million gallons. This one opened in 1984 and was funded with $55 million dollars from the David and Lucille Packard foundation (of Hewlett-Packard fame).
This is the only one on the list that I have actually visited. Located in Long Beach, California, this one has been around since 1998. I actually wrote a paper on the financing of this project while I was in college-and I graduated in 1999. Houses over 11,000 animals and is described as the fourth largest Aquarium in the nation. It gets about 1.5 million visitors a year. How about general admission for $26? Might be the best value on the list!
This one gets about 800,000 visitors a year. This one features several tanks with its largest tank being 400,000 gallons. Open from 9:30am -5:00 most days, this attraction has a $20 daily admission. It has been open since 1977.
This information is full of interesting and fun information. H5
Thanks for the great info. I may go to Seattle to visit my son and know a place to go now. H5
I love aquariums. I missed seeing the one in Seattle when we were there last summer. Great information.
Great aquarium list, I'll have to check some out. H5
Of course I can add my Oregon Coast Aquarium to this list too, since it is a great one. This is where Willy lived for a while.
