Carpets are very heavy when rolled up. It is best to take a very sharp utility knife and cut up the rug into smaller pieces. Two feet widths for example. It is easier to cut from under the carpet, not from the top where the piles get in the way.
As you cut smaller pieces of carpeting, roll them up. Use twine or duct tape to keep them from unraveling. Get them out of the way so you can work on the next piece.
Normally, there is a carpet pad underneath the rug. It is lighter than the rug but if you want to get rid of this pad yourself, at least cut it into two or three pieces and roll them up. Then you will be able to transport them by car or truck.
Sweep and vacuum any dirt and debris that was underneath the old carpeting. Dirt will make it's way up and into your lungs later on. If there is damage in the floor, patch it up. If there is a bad smell, deodorize the floor now.
Arrange for the local government or contractor to pick up and dispose of the old rug. If you have cut up the rug and pad into small pieces, you can dump them into a landfill yourself.
Very nice list! Great job!
So useful! Thanks!
