The "Super Bowl" name came from the bowl game, a term used to describe post-season college football games. The original "bowl game" was played in 1902 at the Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena, California. It was the very first football game played in 1902 as the "Tournament East-West football game", the Pasadena Tournament of Roses and moved to the new Rose Bowl Stadium in 1923. The stadium got its name from the shape of the bowl where the game was played. The Tournament of Roses was help there and it was shaped like a bowl, much like the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut; the Tournament of Roses football game itself eventually came to be known as the Rose Bowl Game.
The Miami Orange Bowl was played in New Orleans, The Sugar Bowl in 1935, Dallas Cotton Bowl)in 1937.
Super Bowl Sunday is now considered a de facto American national holiday, called "Super Bowl Sunday". It is the second-largest day for U.S. food consumption, after Thanksgiving. The Super Bowl has frequently been the most watched American television broadcast of the year. 2011 Super Bowl XLV became the most watched American television program in history, drawing an average audience of 111 million viewers and taking over the spot held by the previous year's Super Bowl, which itself had taken over the #1 spot held for twenty-eight years by the final episode of the TV show Mash.
The most expensive commercials and entertainment are seen on Super Bowl Sunday due to the largest TV and in person audience all year long. Companies like Coca Cola, Budweiser and Doritos spend the most money for commercials this day. Many popular singers and musicians have performed during the event's pre-game and halftime ceremonies because of the exposure.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have won six Super Bowls, the most of any team, while the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers are tied for second place, with five victories each. Fourteen other NFL franchises have won at least one Super Bowl, and four teams (the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans) have never appeared in a Super Bowl.
The Green Bay Packers won the first two Super Bowls, winning over the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders following the 1966 and 1967 seasons. The Packers were led by quarterback Bart Starr who was named the Most Valuable Player for both games. These two championships, coupled with the Packers' NFL championships in 1961, 1962 and 1965 have formed an opinion among many fans who consider the Packers to be the "Team of the '60s."
