Air conditioning is great for those who have it or can afford to use it. Tough economic times forces many to cut back on the utility bill, so the air does not get run often. Others do not have air conditioning and must find old fashioned methods of staying cool. It can be done and here are some effective methods of doing that.
Awnings placed over the windows that get the hot, afternoon sun can help shield your house from the heat. The same holds true for window shades or blinds, pull them down during the day on the windows that get the afternoon sun. Aluminum blinds work great for reflecting heat during the day.

An attic fan can pull out a lot of heat that hovers over the whole house. Ceiling fans also help to keep air circulating, which helps cool off the house. Window fans can help move hot air out or cooler air in, depending on the time of day. Water misting fans are battery operated fans that work wonders by misting you with water.
Loose fitting, cotton clothing allows your skin to breath and receive air. Wear light colors that reflect the heat because dark colored clothing absorbs heat. You can wet a cotton shirt and wear it until you need to get cool again.
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to cool off your body from within. It also helps to put ice in a bowl and face the fan towards it to make your own air conditioning. You can also put ice in an ice pack or towel and hold it on your wrist, forehead and back of the neck to cool your whole body off. Wet bandannas keep the head cool and putting your feet in cold water works well. If you are brave enough, take a cold bath and soak for a while in it. This will keep you cool for a couple of hours.
If you can avoid using the stove, this will help the house to stay cool. Any type of heat source adds to the warmth of the home. Turn off your furnace pilot light if you can. Use a grill or make salads and foods that do not require the stove.
