So you've decided it's time for a new mattress and some new bed linens and pillows, good for you! Now what are you going to do with your old things?
If you are replacing your pillows give some thought to donating your old pillows to the animal shelter. Dogs and cats need bedding at the shelter on an ongoing basis and this is a huge help. As long as they aren't ripped or infested with bedbugs the local shelter may be very interested in having them.
Look for a homeless shelter to donate these items to. Some shelters will wash anything donated before using them but some don't have the facilities to do so. Help them even further by washing or having these items cleaned before donating.
Animal shelters also accept these items.
Sheets and pillow cases still in pretty good condition can be donated to your local salvation army.
There are lots of nursing home residents who would just love a unique set of sheets all their own.
I know of one lady who takes donations of this sort and turns them into warm winter quilts for needy families and nursing home residents.
If you can afford to replace your entire set of bedding - sheets, pillowcases, comforter, curtains and such then you are doing better than some.
Give thought to donating the entire set to a needy family or a kid going off to college.
Local theaters are great at making do with donations. Give them a call and see if they are interested in what you have to offer.
Beware though because they may only want your old comforter for the huge ruffle or your leopard print sheets to be turned into a sarong!
It's fun to donate items we no longer want. It's even more fun some times to see what others will make of our donations. Think before you ditch it!
