With the holidays approaching it is more likely than ever that all of us will need to travel with our crock pots. Here are some ways that you can more easily achieve that and arrive at your destination without a big mess.
If you are not fortunate enough to own a crock pot that is made for traveling don't worry. To secure the lid use rubber bands. Keep it safely in place by stretching the rubber bands around the handles and across the lid.
If you are going on a long road trip to get to your destination, consider cooking your dish while on the go. All you have to do is purchase a power converter. They make them that turn a power point or cigarette lighter into a 110 volt outlet. Once you have this converter just plug up your crock pot in the car and it'll be cooking while your on the road. However, I do not recomment trying to cook brothy soups while driving. It could be messy (I had to find this out the hard way.... just sayin').
To keep your crock pot warm while travelling and to lose the least amount of heat possible, consider wrapping your crock pot in a bath towel or newspaper. If you choose to do this, might I suggest that you steady the crock pot by placing it in a cardboard box. If you plan on travelling with your crock pot often you may consider purchasing a crock pot travel bag that is already insulated and has a carry strap.
I always carry a small extension cord with me if I'm taking my crock pot to someone elses house. Just in case there is no outlets available close to where all of the food is being set up, this will prove to be a GREAT solution.
If you haven't cooked your food on the road make sure you plug it up immediately upon arriving and turn it to the low setting to keep it warm. Just to be safe (because the last thing you want to do is make anyone sick) serve it within 2 hours of arriving.
No matter where your final destination is chances are everyone is going to be hungry. Utilize your crock pot and don't be afraid to travel with it. You won't believe how fast, easy and stress free crock pot travel can be. Give it a try the next time you're travelling.
