Most homeowner's insurance will cover lost or stolen clothes and luggage, minus the deductible. You may also have a credit cared that provides coverage in the event of a theft. It is advised to take pictures of everything in the suitcase before leaving.

Travel Documents

Protect yourself by making a copy of any travel documents. This includes passports, plane tickets, event tickets and even your itinerary. You can leave one set with a trusted friend or relative as well as keeping an extra set in your luggage. You may want to keep numbers for credit cards on hand in case they are lost or taken. It is best not to bring valuables, but always lock them in a hotel safe if you take them.

Credit Cards

Another one of the summer vacation ideas to protect your stuff is to contact any credit card companies and let them know what your travel dates are. They can look at your purchases and spot items that seem out of place. They will contact you to make sure that purchases are legitimate. If you leave the country without notifying them, some banks may flag your account thinking that identity theft has happened, especially if they see an out of country purchase.

Cellphones

You need to be careful with your cell phone if you are traveling overseas. You can end up with roaming fees. This is the time to ask your carrier about international calling plans. Some people have purchased an inexpensive phone and switched out the SIM card while traveling overseas. Your own phone can cost you money with automatic programs that update, etc.

Hotels and Other Savings

The last of the summer vacation ideas to protect your stuff is to make the best financial decisions. You can protect your money by negotiating prices. For example, call a hotel directly instead of using the common 800 number. Ask for the lowest rate available. If you want souvenirs, buy them online. Also purchase any admission tickets online because they are cheaper than at the gate. Be sure to check out ticket savings at warehouse club stores, coupon sites and other clubs you belong to.
