Introduction:As online writers scramble to make sense of the new Google algorithm that plummeted page views for writers across the Internet, one thing becomes obvious. The face of online writing has changed and writers need to adapt to that change quickly--unless they want to go down with the ship.
Many online writers balk at the idea of including references in their work--yet it appears that is one of the reasons Google has penalized entire sites. Linking to reputable sites, such as edu and gov sites is more important than ever and builds your credibility as a writer.
Google claims that user-generated work is riddled with errors and filled with drivel providing the reader with little real information. Now is the time to focus on the quality of your work. Keep it relevant for the reader and provide information he can use.
Take a good look at your profile on writing sites. If you have links back to those very sites that have been penalized by Google, it might be time to replace them with another site that is in Google's favor. Although this is just conjecture at this point, it seems logical that associating yourself as a writer with sites that Google has devalued might be detrimental.
If you are an expert in an area, now is the time to establish yourself as such. Include your expertise in your profile, add it as a signature at the bottom of blog posts and join forums or online communities to share your expertise.
Use your expertise to develop a niche and publish quality work in that area. Build a following of readers who want the information you have to share. Offering to guest blog for others who share your interests and adding your expertise and qualifications to the author bio, may be an effective way to build your reputation as an expert in the area.
There are no guarantees of the direction online writing will take. Changes are sure to surface as the dust settles the new algorithm begins to sort out the wheat from the chaff. Positioning yourself in the best light possible now is a move in the right direction.
