Any caregiver of the elderly needs to be aware of some good movies for senior citizens for those down times when a movie is called for. The below good movies for senior citizens have all been reviewed by a 94 year old (Gertie) and given "arthritic thumbs up." A link to the blog "Good Movies for Senior Citizens" is in the supporting links section of this list and gives fuller reviews of the below movies.
The movie Big is just downright fun! Light and easy, the story of Big is about a young boy who suddenly gets his wish granted and is transformed into the body of an adult. Tom Hanks, true to form, plays the part perfectly. Your senior citizen is sure to giggle through the whole movie.
Yentl tells the tale of a young woman who is forbidden to study the Torah and is emotionally lost after her father dies. So, she takes to the road as a boy - that's right, a woman in man's clothing. Barbra Streisand not only plays the title role of Yentl, but she also directed and sings the songs which play in the movie background. This one is a real crowd pleaser and is perfect for any senior citizen.
I found this movie a bit slow and 94 year old Gertie couldn't stand the squeak in Joan Bennett's voice but it's still a decent tale. This old movie is about a man and woman whose daughter is married and having a child. He's not at all happy with the prospects of being a Grandfather as he's just not that old - at least, in his own mind.
Doc Hollywood is an all around great movie! Michael J. Fox plays the part of a young doctor who is on his way to Hollywood for that dream job when he gets sidelined by a white picket fence. The story line includes the requisites for any good tale for senior citizens - humor, a love story line, and a pig. How much better can it get?
Once upon a time there was a woman's softball league which was put together in haste to entertain America and keep up moral once the men went to war. A League of Their Own is based on a true story although plenty of liberties have been taken in putting the story together. Tom Hanks plays the rather drunk, rather rude coach who believes that coaching a bunch of girls is way below his talents. Geena Davis is cast in the role of the star softball player in competition with her younger sister.
The above movies will not only entertain your senior citizen friend but are suitable for viewing by people of any age.
I agree, great list for anyone. I especially love Doc Hollywood.
