If you have the opportunity to work as an extra in a movie or are thinking about doing so, here are some tips on how you should behave and what to expect.
Always make sure you are at least get to the set on time. But better yet, be early whenever possible. The movie sets and the crew are always changing and modifying things. So, if you are there early, the more help you can provide. Also, expect long work hours. Bring comfortable clothes and shoes.
Some jobs may pay a few hundred dollars a day while others may just provide a T-shirt or maybe just a pat on the back. If you're looking for a stable income, these types of jobs are probably not for you.
When working as an extra, you may have long stretches where nothing happens. You may just be sitting or standing around and waiting. Fully expect this and make sure you pay attention. Don't use your cell phone to call someone (other than emergencies) and be constantly talking to the other extras. You never know (but you'll get hints) on when the director will want to quickly more the extras around.
On many sets, food is catered in, but don't count on this. Bring some snacks that you can have in your pockets that you can chew on during the day. You should also make sure you know where the bathrooms are.
As an extra, you were hired to do a job, period. So, don't think it is an opportunity for you to start fraternizing with the stars. They need their time alone on the set as well. Don't even ask for autographs.
If you follow these tips, you'll be a much better extra in a movie, and a lot happier (get into less trouble).
