Introduction:Writers know that where their work is published has a big affect on its success, but they don't always know how to choose the right site for the work they do.
One of the first things you should consider when choosing a writing site for your work is Publishing Rights. Read the Terms of Service closely to determine what rights you are giving away. Although there are times when you may be willing to give up all rights to your work in exchange for a fee or to get your work out there in front of readers, retaining the right to republish is always desired.
Examine the publishing format to determine if its a good match for you. If you enjoy writing free flowing prose, "how to" formats are probably not right for you. Find a format that fits your writing style. As you gain experience, you may find you can tailor your work to meet a variety of formats. As a beginning writer, choosing a format that matches your writing style is important to your success.
Don't make the mistake of publishing all your work on a little known site thinking you will draw readers with your stunning prose. The chances are slim that you will be able to overcome the hurdle of low traffic no matter how great your skills are as a writer. Once you gain experience and develop a reader base, this becomes less important--but give yourself a break and choose a site that is popular and is known to bring in readers.
New writers often take a look at the quality of writing on a site and are elated when they think they can "do better than that". If your initial reaction is that the writing on the site is less than desirable, keep looking. If you question the quality of the writing on a writing site, readers will too. Don't risk earning the reputation of producing poor quality work.
As an online writer it is up to you to make the important decisions on where and when to publish your work. Although online writing always carries with it some risk, making sound decisions decreases your risk of pouring your heart and soul into writing only to discover no one ever reads it.
Great article! H5!
Great advice for writers H5!
This is a great article for online writers. Thanks for sharing. I am always trying to read up and gain more knowledge of online writing tips, techniques, and experiences because I really feel like it will help me out. I am relatively new to online writing (been doing it for about 2 years, but only "super seriously as a career kind of thing" for about 3-4 months) so I need all the help I can get! :) Again, thank you for sharing this helpful list.
LOVE this advice, thanks so much for putting it out there. It is so hard when you are first starting out as an online writer! I am still learning the ropes!
This is especially welcome advice for those of us who are writing online "for fun." It's still important to consider reputation and learning -- one never knows when that will come in handy!
